Experience in the US with the use of bacterial detection systems cleared by the FDA to allow the use of platelet products for up to seven days
A transfusion medicine physician wonders what has been the experience in the US with the use of either one of the bacterial detection systems that have been cleared by US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to allow use of the platelet product for up to seven days. To his knowledge there are only two such systems so far are GambroBCT and Fenwal.
Editors' Note: on January 29, 2008 Gambro BCT, Inc. and Fenwal, Inc. announced their decision to suspend the PASSPORT (Post Approval Surveillance Study of Platelet Outcomes, Release Tested) Study for 7-day platelet storage.
