Awards & Recognitions

Each year, CBBS honors talented individuals for their extraordinary contributions to the profession.

The Scientific Commitee is charged with selecting individuals to nominate for each award. The committee has the option not to provide a nomination for an award if they do not believe a qualified individual can be identified at the time of selection.

Upon the Board’s approval, individuals are notified of their nomination and award presentations are made at the CBBS Annual Meeting.

Currently, CBBS awards include the following:

Formerly known as the Herbert Perkins Scientific Lectureship & Award, this award was renamed in 2014 to the Herbert Perkins & George Garratty Memorial Lectureship. Herbert Perkins was the Senior Medical Scientist at Blood Centers of the Pacific and Clinical Professor of Medicine, University of California San Francisco. Dr. Perkins’ lifetime achievements contributed profoundly to the scientific foundation of the fields of transfusion and transplantation medicine, and to the education and training of scientists, fellows, physicians and medical technologists in these fields. George Garratty, PhD, FRCPath, was the Scientific Director, American Red Cross Blood Services, Southern California Region, Pomona, CA, and Clinical Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles. His research was mainly concerned with immune red cell and platelet destruction, with a special emphasis on autoimmune and drug-induced immune hemolytic anemias. Dr. Garratty served as President of CBBS from 1985-1986 and was the recipient of numerous awards, honors, and recognitions.

Each year a lectureship is awarded to an individual actively involved in education, training, research and/or the practice of a scientific nature pertaining to transfusion medicine. The recipient will be a scientist who has demonstrated a commitment to transfusion medicine or cellular therapy, and has applied new insights or new technologies to relevant scientific questions that have led to seminal contributions to the field.

Dennis Goldfinger was a leader in the field transfusion medicine of transfusion medicine for over four decades, first at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and then at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. While director of transfusion medicine at Cedars-Sinai, he established their first transfusion medicine fellowship. Over the course of his career, he was personally involved in the training of over 40 transfusion medicine physicians. In addition to a passion for training young transfusion medicine physicians, he was also at forefront of change in the field. He established one of the first autologous donation programs during the early HIV epidemic, was the first to routinely wash red cells forming the foundation for leukoreduction and finally was one of the first to implement universal irradiation of blood products. He is author of dozens of publications, as well as the recipient of numerous awards including the AABB Emily Cooley Lectureship award and the CBBS Suzanne Ledin Memorial Lectureship.

Upon his retirement, he founded the Dennis Goldfinger Memorial Lectureship. This award recipient would be a transfusion medicine physician who consistently demonstrated one or more of the following throughout their career: dedication to clinical practice of transfusion medicine, commitment to training of future transfusion medicine physicians and/or leader in bringing about innovative changes to the field.

After a long and successful career in transfusion medicine, Dr. Dennis Goldfinger passed away peacefully in September 2021. To continue the tradition of the CBBS Dennis Goldfinger Award Lectureship, which he established in 2017, a fund has been established to accept donations for future award recipients.

The Upton-Hemphill Award commemorates the work of the Founders of CBBS.

John R. Upton, M.D. gave birth to the idea of a statewide system of blood banks by suggesting it as early as 1943.  He was chairman of the California Medical Association Commission on Blood Banks from 1948 to 1958, and was the first President of CBBS, serving in that role from 1953 to 1958.  Dr. Upton was instrumental in the formation of several of the blood banks that became Institutional Members.

Bernice Hemphill, a licensed Bio-Analyst, acted as the Administrative Assistant to the California Medical Association Commission of Blood Banks at its inception in 1948.  Mrs. Hemphill was Secretary of the CBBS from 1953 to 1956 and promoted the Clearinghouse Program of CBBS, which was transferred to the Pacific District of the American Association of Blood Banks in 1956.  She devoted her life to blood banking in the administration of the Irwin Memorial Blood Centers and in service to CBBS, the National Clearinghouse System, and the American Association of Blood Banks.
